| How far is RTCW to release | Posted Thursday, August 9, 2001 by xcal well it seems like good news if you take this report which was posted on voodoo extreme
The developers have now reached the testing and polish stage as the game's features are complete. While Gray Matter focuses on polishing the game balance, working on the cinematics and storytelling, and finalizing technical issues like video card compatibility, Nerve Software continues to wrap up the multiplayer portion of the game. The teams have also begun extensive testing.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be shown at QuakeCon this week. Attendees will be able to see for themselves just how far along the game is, and they'll even get a glimpse of the multiplayer game at the convention as well.
be sure to check out this thread for the full lowdown

ID SOFTWARE'S RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN(tm} DELIVERS MISSION-BASED MULTIPLAYER TEAM WARFARE
Mesquite, Texas - August 7, 2001 - Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the latest installment of id Software's watershed first-person action franchise, will feature complex, mission-based multiplayer warfare. The multiplayer element of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, currently in development by Nerve Software and executive produced by id Software(tm) and Gray Matter Interactive, pits players in a tooth-and-nail contest for front-line domination in this supernatural World War II-themed action title for the PC.
In addition to an action-packed story-driven single-player experience where players must infiltrate deep into the heart of the Third Reich, Return to Castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer mode enlists gamers to hone their tactical skills in a series of combat scenarios. Gamers will join the fight as an axis or ally soldier and be challenged to intense, realistic campaigns like storming beachheads, infiltrating military installations, holding strategic positions, and more. The game features multiple objectives spanning a variety of maps, including an Axis airbase, a war-torn German village and a secret Nazi laboratory.
"The Wolfenstein universe is rife with possibilities for truly incredible gamplay," states Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "By working closely with Gray Matter and Nerve, we can simultaneously develop rich, fully-realized single and multiplayer experiences. Gamers are going to be blown away."
Packed with realistic team-based multiplayer gameplay, Return to Castle Wolfenstein features four different character classes -- soldier, engineer, medic and lieutenant. Each class has unique attributes and the ability to access different ammunition and equipment that compliments their style of warfare.
"Set against the backdrop of the greatest conflict the world has ever known, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is poised to deliver a deep, team-based multiplayer gaming experience, in addition to an amazing single-player campaign," states Larry Goldberg, executive vice president of Activision Worldwide Studios. "The varied countryside of World War II-era Germany lends itself to a wide array of game scenarios that will provide both machinegun maniacs and silent assassins with virtually limitless replayability."
| Multiplayer Developers revealed | Posted Tuesday, August 7, 2001 by xcal First off if u wanna check out the full interview check this
IGN Interview
Nerve Software
So it seems a developer called nerve will be doing the multiplayer for Rtcw and from what ive read it sounds to be rather tasty :)
It's going to be a World War 2 multiplayer implementation that is uniquely Wolfenstien, in that it's the universe that we create as opposed to garden-variety shooters' multiplayer deathmatch and capture the flag stuff. It'll be a mission-based Axis vs. Allies team oriented multiplayer with lots of different cool scenarios on the maps we have.
We have a very robust scripting system that'll allow players and us to create any kind of scenario we can think of in the multiplayer game. For example, we have a beach map that includes Allied forces coming in off the beach with mortars raining down on 'em. The Axis soldiers are holding the bunker ahead firing down on them. The allied objective here is to penetrate the sea wall and grab the top-secret documents and transmit the documents back to allied headquarters. That's just one example of what we can do with the missions. There are many different types of maps and a wide variety of mission objectives. We also have scenarios in maps that contain multiple objectives, so you have to do x before y, and in turn z after y, in which case you actually win the round.
Basically its sort of a four class system where you have your regular soldier who can carry any of the weapons. The medic's primary job is to heal guys, obviously. The engineer is into demolition, and is able to diffuse the bombs that other engineers set. Then there's a lieutenant who has special abilities like calling in air strikes, for example.
Lets just hope the multiplayer side turns out as great as the 1 player side is looking :)
