Greg Goodrich Diary
Posted Saturday, October 27, 2001 by xcal
An interesting read over over at ign, covering the initial game development and some insights into the 1 player game, including some new info on the weapons and stealth tactics

"We've also provided you with 16 different weapons and a swift boot kick. Most weapons have alternate firing modes and a few have 'silenced' options. The OSA prototype rifle is very helpful in our large outdoor terrain maps. Its alternate firing mode is an experimental thermal optic system that picks up the heat signature of an enemy allowing you to make silent long-range kills in complete darkness.

Theres 3 brand new screenshots at the bottom of the article so its a must check :)

Polishing
Posted Wednesday, October 24, 2001 by xcal
So what are Gray Matter and the guys up to? well there still polishing off the game making sure everything is as good as it can be.
Word from Greg Goodrich

"With the map test, the QA department at Activision, Id, Gray Matter, Nerve, and friends and family, there are a lot of eyes looking and playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein right now. It's a wonderful thing and it will go a long way to making the game as robust and solid as possible. Right now we're still in the Beta phase fixing bugs, tweaking cut-scene cameras and adding story polish where needed. I can safely say this game is getting the attention it deserves."

Good news :)

    Gamespy Previews RTCW
Posted Monday, October 15, 2001 by xcal
Gamespy has just put up a good 3 page preview of RTCW, covering both single and multiplayer feautures

"Das Boot" required Allied troops to invade a submarine base and dynamite an experimental Axis sub. This map highlighted the importance of having an Engineer or three on your side, as Allies not only had to dynamite the submarine, but also blast a couple of locked doors to make the trek there a little easier. As you might guess, the Axis side tried to prevent the sub's demolition until the clock ran down.

In Objective mode, the Assault map would require one side to dynamite a radio tower after fighting their way through several fortified gates. At the Oktoberfest event, however, we played this map in "Checkpoint mode" (see above). This required the two teams to capture four flags before the time ran out to secure victory. If the time ran out, the holder of the most flags was named the victor. If it was a 2/2 tie, the round went to "sudden death," where the first team to capture a third flag won.

    RTCW multiplayer test goes professional
Posted Friday, October 12, 2001 by Lestat
As some of you may already have noticed, after much conjecture, Clanbase have now added the Return To Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer test to their repertoire of games. After seeing the overwhelming response to the demo alone, the Clanbase admins authorised that the test to be added as an official Clanbase supported league.

At present, it is being supported as a Quake 3 mod, but this will change with the release of the complete game. Clanbase rules for our favourite WWII blast are extremely flexible at the moment, with Clanbase willing to change the setup from player feedback, so get over to Clanbase register your clan and tell them how you all think the league should work.
Check back later for an interview with Baston from Clanbase.

    Gamespot New preview
Posted Friday, October 12, 2001 by xcal
Theres a very nice preview up at gamespot, 4 page preview covering single and multiplayer, mentioned are a few tweaks to multi from the test , particularly engineers, and flamethrowers

The other major change to the game's multiplayer formula that we noted while playing Beach Invasion was to the engineers. After placing dynamite next to the sea wall door and sea wall breach (or anywhere on the map, for that matter), engineers need to take an extra five seconds to arm the explosives--otherwise, the dynamite will just sit there. The arming process involves switching to your tweezers, standing over the dynamite, and holding the fire key for about five seconds. Just like before, you can keep this button depressed to increase the dynamite's fuse by five-second increments. While this adds an extra level of difficulty for players who play as engineers, the nice thing about this new feature is that once an explosive is placed, any engineer can then arm it, even if the player who originally planted the bomb has been killed.

best read the whole article though here

    Cant get enough previews
Posted Monday, October 1, 2001 by xcal
Loads of previews popping up now the Test has been released, heres one of the good ones :), plenty of screenshots if you havent downloaded the demo yet

If there is one thing you can’t miss it is definitely the power of the modified Quake 3 engine that is used in RTCW. This thing is amazing. It has the most impressive fire effects I have ever seen. When you are running up the beach only to see artillery shots fly over your head, or sometimes unfortunately on your head, you can only sit and stare as several impressive explosions flood the beach.

    Extra Sniper Rifle
Posted Monday, October 1, 2001 by xcal
It would seemed as though an extra weapon has slipped into the test, an unfinished version of the Garand has made its way in to the test :)

    Play as a Soldier
Bring down the console with the "~" key and type "/mp_weapon 7"
Next time you respawn, you'll have the Garand.

    Source:3dactionplanet

I've checked it out and it definetely exists, although you'll only really believe it once you enter zoom mode with the rifle :) and if you still dont believe have a look at this :)
