Linux Client files available
Posted Sunday, September 23, 2001 by xcal
The client installs for Linux are now available. The smaller version does NOT have media so you will need the Win32 setup if you get it. The larger version has everything you need.

The files are available from here

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/linux/

You may have to jump back a directory for the ftp to pick up the folders, you may also find that currently, you might not be able to connect due to high demand :(

heres a few extra mirrors http://www.bluesnews.com/files/idstuff/wolf/linux/wolfmptest-0.7.16-1.shtml

Nerve Software Interview
Posted Thursday, September 20, 2001 by xcal
GameSpot recently spoke to Brandon James, president of Nerve Software, about the developer's recently released multiplayer test for Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Will you make any changes to Wolfenstein's multiplayer component that are based on user feedback to the test?

All the feedback is being sorted at this moment into the proper categories. There are issues that people brought up that we've known about, but haven't been a huge priority over the last three months. There are other issues that we didn't know about, which we're looking into. It's safe to say that yes, there will be changes to the game because of what we've seen and what we've been able to test with a larger number of players

Keep Track of your team
Posted Wednesday, September 19, 2001 by xcal
When playing on a team this helps to keep track of where your team, and what there status is, i found this option hidden away today,

firstly go into your options until you get to the screen shown below

And select the option the cursor is highlited over , Select TEAM OVERLAY ON

Now in game you will see a box highlited in the top right hand corner for each player on your team, they look like this

This Gives you instant information about your Team , the letter before the name indicate the class, in this example S for Soldier, Then the player name, then his current location, and finally his health. Makes finding the wounded and seeing what classes your team are much easier :)

DaFly's Test Review
Posted Wednesday, September 19, 2001 by xcal
Heres a snippet taken from the article, to read more click here

On starting the game it is immediately recognisable as being based on the Quake 3 engine, although the developers, Gray Matter have done a lot more than simply create a mod. As they previously did with the gangland warfare title Kingpin (based on the Quake 2 engine), the developers have utterly butchered the base Quake game and squeezed out a new level of detail and realism.

Id's Todd Hollenshead thoughts :)
Posted Tuesday, September 18, 2001 by xcal
Many thanks again to Lestat on getting the scoop..

A quick summary of the release when posed to Todd (ID Software)

The initial hit on both the download servers and the game servers was huge.Fileplanet is still getting an enormous amount of hits for it. Did this meet your expectations?

We knew people were excited about the test and expected a tremendous amount of downloads. It's pretty impressive that as of yesterday morning (Sept.17), Fileplanet alone had over 100,000 downloads.
The game server numbers have been climbing pretty steadily since release. I would love to see us break the 1,000 server mark this week to help ease the load on the existing servers. They're all crowded pretty much around the clock right now.

How do you feel the test has been received so far?

We're very pleased. We've had a ton of positive feedback and the stability for an initial test release has been quite good. The fact that it's already second on the GameSpy stat list is gratifying, too.

How representative of the final multiplayer game is this release?

This is just one map. Other maps have different styles, objectives and gameplay. The gameplay is representative of what this map will be like in the final release, however it's still a "test" only. So we're expecting to make revisions and improvements in response to any significant problems or issues that people encounter.

When you play, what class do you usually choose?

I switch them around (even within the same game depending upon what my team needs), and I encourage people to do the same. I think all of the classes are fun and there's so much variety just within the soldier class because of the weapon selection possibilities.

Big thanks to Todd and Lestat for providing the info :)

Gray Matter still busy polishing :)
Posted Tuesday, September 18, 2001 by xcal
Gray matter are stil busy polishing the 1 player game, heres what Drew Markham has to say

"We're currently in the midst of polishing the game. Cinematics are going in, as well as a lot of new in-game conversations and dialogue that tie the story together. It's exciting to see all of these different elements come together so nicely as we hit the final stretch. Also, we're getting cool new music cues every day from composer Bill Brown, and they are also taking the game to a new level."

Man i want this game so polished that i can see my own face in it :)
Good work guys:)

Some of the official news from the activision mailer

Hopefully after the weekends madness , and with some decent servers in europe being set up, when can really give this test a good hammering :)

Grenade Tips
Posted Monday, September 17, 2001 by xcal
Not getting the most out of your grenades then read on :)

Grenade Tips

Throwing:

Grenades use the horizon line to determine the distance of your throw. If
you want to drop a grenade right in front of you, look towards the ground
and simply tap the 'attack' key. If you want to throw a grenade a great
distance, look above the horizon line at varying degrees. The further above
the horizon, the further you will toss the grenade. However, this does have
a diminishing effect. Looking directly upwards towards the sky will cause
the grenade to return to where you are standing.

Short Fuse:

Both the 'pineapple' and 'potato masher' grenades use a fuse detonator. The
length of which is 5 seconds. You can short fuse a grenade by pressing and
holding your 'attack' key. You will hear 4 'ticks' before it detonates. Let
go of the 'attack' key when you want to release the grenade. An experienced
soldier can time the throw and usually cause a grenade to detonate at the
perfect spot.

Bounce:

Use the bounce of the grenade to your advantage. No, it is not realistic,
but it can come it handy when trying to toss a grenade around corners or
into holes. The bounce can also be used to achieve great distances with your
throw.

Thanks to Gray Matter (Greg) For the tips :)

The 3 new multiplayer shots
Posted Saturday, September 15, 2001 by xcal
already posted these on the forums, but if you havent seen them, here they are :)

The classes explained
Posted Saturday, September 15, 2001 by xcal
Not sure what the different classes do well read on :)

Soldier
Although the standard light infantry soldiers for the Allied and Axis sides look different from each other, they're both functionally identical. The Allied soldiers don the standard-issue green and brown GI garb of the time, while the German soldiers wear slightly darker uniforms, complete with black helmets and trench coats. Of all four classes in the multiplayer game, the soldier is the most adept in combat since he can equip any of the two-handed weapons that are available to you. Additionally, soldiers can also carry four grenades, a pistol, a combat knife, and three clips for their primary weapon.

Engineer
These engineers are the game's demolitions experts, and while they can't equip any two-handed weapon other than the Thompson, they do have the unique ability of repairing and destroying hardened emplacements that you'll find throughout the game's levels, and they have an initial health of 110 hit points. Specifically, the engineer carries a toolkit, which when activated and held down for a given length of time will repair gun emplacements that have been damaged by enemy fire. This toolkit can also defuse any dynamite that the enemy places to breach a wall or blow down a door. When defusing a bomb or repairing an object, a timer/health bar will appear that will indicate exactly how much longer you need. The engineer is also the only class capable of carrying and setting dynamite. Like the soldier, he can also carry four grenades, a knife, and a pistol, but he's limited to two clips for his Thompson.

Medic
A medic revives a fallen comrade. Like the engineer, the medic is a specialized class of infantry who is nonetheless quite capable of defending himself. He's also limited to a pistol, a knife, and a Thompson, but he can carry only a single grenade and he starts with only a single clip for his two-handed gun. To offset his relatively small arsenal, the medic has the unique ability of regenerating his own health up to 123 hit points, which goes quite a long way in extending his survival on the battlefield. The medic can also drop health packs that, when picked up by teammates, will restore 20 points of health. This ability is regulated by his power bar, however. Lastly, the medic can also approach any player who's been mortally wounded (and who hasn't jumped back into the limbo screen) and restore him to half of his total health, which means that a good medic can significantly change the pace of a battle since he can effectively spawn in teammates faster than the reinforcement counter can.

Lieutenant
The lieutenant is arguably the most powerful of the four classes in Return to Castle Wolfenstein's multiplayer game. Like the others, he can carry a pistol, a combat knife, and a single grenade, but he can also choose to wield any one of the game's three submachine guns--the Thompson, the Sten, or the MP40--with two clips of ammo. The lieutenant's supposed leadership role stems from his ability to drop packets of ammo for his teammates and from the fact that he can call in two types of devastating attacks to level a certain area of the battlefield. The first such attack is an airstrike, which the lieutenant can summon by tossing a smoke grenade anywhere on the map. A few seconds later, a series of explosions will rock the area immediately around the smoke grenade. His second attack is a mortar strike thatcan hit any target on the map simply by lining it up with the crosshairs of his binoculars. The mortar attack isn't as powerful as the airstrike, but its reach extends to nearly anywhere that falls within the lieutenant's line of sight.

Wolfenstein Press Release :)

RETURN TO CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN MULTIPLAYER TEST
AVAILABLE ON SEPT. 15

Compatibility Test Gives Gamers Opportunity to
Provide Feedback on Hotly-Anticipated Action Title

MESQUITE, Texas - September 14, 2001 - Get ready to start those downloads.
The Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer compatibility test will be
available starting Saturday, Sept. 15, from id SoftwareTM and Activision,
Inc. (NASADQ: ATVI). The test, which will be available via download at
www.castlewolfenstein.com, www.gamespot.com, www.gamespy.com and on multiple
mirror sites across the country, gives gamers a chance to compete in a
special multiplayer map from id Software's Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Players are encouraged to provide feedback to the team on gameplay and
compatibility via email at wolfbugs@idsoftware.com. The multiplayer test is
not the official demo for Return to Castle Wolfenstein and does not contain
the single player portion of the game.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer pits players in a team-based Axis
versus Allies contest for front-line domination, where multiple player
classes must mobilize and work together to accomplish mission objectives.
The multiplayer element of Return to Castle Wolfenstein is currently in
development by Nerve Software with assistance from id Software and Gray
Matter Interactive.

Slated for release later this year, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a
supernatural World War II-themed action title for the PC, where players
assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, a U.S. super-soldier charged with
single-handedly stopping the darkest plans of the Third Reich. Return to
Castle Wolfenstein is being developed by Gray Matter Interactive with
assistance from id Software.

The multiplayer delay
Posted Friday, September 14, 2001 by xcal
Just recieved an email from activision concerning the demo release slipping 1 day, totally understandable in the circumstances

The test has been delayed until Saturday -- for those of you
outside of the U.S., you undoubtedly are aware of what many of us in this
country have had to deal with these last few days. As a result, it's slowed
a few things down.

We should be releasing the test on Saturday (GameSpot has already reported
this). GameSpot and GameSpy are simultaneously releasing the file.

i'm hopefully gonna arrange some ftp access to help mirror the download, i cant host it on my site (due to bandwidth reasons), but hopefully by tommorow i'll have some ftp help :)

Multiplayer Test Demo Map
Posted Wednesday, September 12, 2001 by xcal
Just a little snippet of info regarding the demo ,

The test will consist of the same Axis vs. Allies map that was shown at QuakeCon last month(which can be seen on the downloadable videos), a massive mission-based map where the Allies need to assault an Axis beachhead, infiltrate a compound to steal documents, and use a communications tower to transmit information back home.

All sound rather tasty :)

Nerve Software Interview
Posted Sunday, September 9, 2001 by xcal
Gamespy has managed to get an interview with Nerve Software, the guys responsible for the multipayer side of thing for Wolfy, you can check the article out here Nerve Interview

  • From the beginning Gray Matter was tasked with creating the best first-person shooter we could possibly make for the single-player. And we've certainly done so. When the idea was brought up to have the guys at Nerve take the asset base and piece together the multiplayer component for the game, we jumped at the chance. Together with id software and Nerve we continue to polish Return to Castle Wolfenstein to make it the best possible experience for everyone.
